The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is the ultimate book about following one’s dream of travel. It is one of my all-time favorite books of any genre because of the way it touches the soul. This exciting, emotional story takes you on the road from Spain to Eygpt with a young shepherd who has always longed to travel. Once he finally leaps, his travels quickly become a tale of self-discovery and lessons learned. The Alchemist is an easy read that provokes deep thought.

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts

Another one of my favorite novels, Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, has put traveling to India near the top of my bucket list. Shantaram is about the life of an Australian convict who escapes prison and ends up in Bombay, India, in the 1980s. The main character, completely culture-shocked, befriends a tour guide who teaches him (and the reader) about the city, culture, language, and way of life. Shantaram is a long adventurous read worth every page.

Wild: From Lost to Found on the PCT

As you may have noticed with the Alchemist and Shantaram, I am a massive fan of books about traveling for self-discovery. Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail (1995) is a memoir by Cheryl Strayed about her 3-month solo trek up the PCT after her mother’s untimely death.

Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert is another memoir about self-discovery after a life-altering event. Elizabeth Gilbert decides to leave her husband after nearly a decade of marriage in this memoir. She then embarks on a journey to three different countries on a quest to “find herself.”

The Art of Travel by Alain de Botton

Have you ever asked yourself why you love to travel? Alain de Botton explores this question in his best-seller The Art of Travel. “If our lives are dominated by a search for happiness, then perhaps few activities reveal as much about the dynamics of this quest — in all its ardor and paradoxes — than our travels.”

On The Road by Jack Kerouac

On the Road by Jack Kerouac is a book of travel stories highlighting his journey across the United States from 1947 to 1950. This book is a classic counterculture text that holds back no detail. “Nothing behind me, everything ahead of me, as is ever so on the road.”
