About Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Isla Mujeres, translated to “Island of Women,” has a fascinating history. It was a sacred place for the Mayans long before it became a tourist hotspot. The ruins of a small temple dedicated to Ixchel can still be found at the island’s southern tip. 

Ixchel is the Mayan goddess of fertility and healing. It’s believed that Mayan women would make pilgrimages to the island to seek blessings for fertility and childbirth. When Spanish explorers arrived in the early 16th century, they found numerous clay statues of women, which led them to the name.

Fast forward a few centuries, and the island became a refuge for pirates. There are many legends about buried treasure and pirate escapades. 

One of the most famous pirates to have sought sanctuary here was Fermín Mundaca, who fell in love with a local woman. He built a hacienda for her, which you can still visit today.

Until the late 20th century, Isla Mujeres was primarily a fishing village. The boom in tourism in nearby Cancún eventually spilled over, transforming the island into the travel destination it is today.

If you’re coming from outside Mexico, your first stop will likely be Cancún International Airport (CUN). Major airlines like American Airlines, Delta, and Aeroméxico offer frequent flights to Cancún from various international cities.

Once you land and go through customs, you’ll need to get to the ferry dock. The most convenient way is to take a taxi or a private transfer, which should take about 30 minutes from the airport.

The ferry operates from two locations in Cancún – Puerto Juárez and the Hotel Zone. The ferry ride is a quick 15 to 20 minutes, and ferries depart every half hour from early morning until late at night. 

You can charter a private boat from Cancún if you want something more exclusive. This option lets you explore the surrounding waters and journey to Isla Mujeres at your own pace.

Getting Around Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Once you’ve landed on Isla Mujeres, you’ll find it easy to get around. The island is about five miles long, so your options are simple.

• Golf Carts: These are the island’s preferred mode of transport. You can rent one near the ferry dock.
• Taxis: They’re around if you need them, but they’re often unnecessary, with the island being so small.
• Bicycles: A great way to get some exercise and see the island. Rentals are easy to find near the ferry terminal.

There is no wrong time to visit Isla Mujeres, Mexico. But timing can make a difference in your travel experience, from the weather to the crowds. Let’s break it down by season so you can pick the perfect time for your trip.

High Season: December to April

• Weather: Expect sunny skies and warm temperatures, ranging from the mid-70s to the mid-80s Fahrenheit. It’s the dry season, so rain is rare.
• Crowds: This is the most popular time to visit, so be prepared for more tourists and higher prices on accommodations and activities.
• Why Go During High Season: This is your window if you’re after that picture-perfect beach vacation with reliable weather.

Shoulder Season: May to June and November

• Weather: Still warm but more humid. Temperatures hover around the mid-80s. Occasional rain showers, but they’re usually brief.
• Crowds: Fewer tourists means you’ll have more room to breathe. Prices for hotels and activities may also be slightly lower.
• Why Go During Shoulder Season: Great for travelers who want good weather but fewer crowds. Plus, you might snag some deals.

Low Season: July to October

• Weather: Hot and humid, with temperatures often reaching into the 90s. This is also hurricane season, so heavy rains and storms are possible.
• Crowds: The island is less crowded, and you’ll find some of the year’s lowest prices.
• Why Go During Low Season: If you’re on a budget and don’t mind rolling the dice with the weather, this could be your best bet.

• Whale Shark Season: You can swim with whale sharks from June to September. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one of the best things I’ve ever done.
• Carnaval: Usually held in February or March, this is a fun local festival with parades, music, and dancing. It’s nowhere near the scale of larger places, but it’s still a fun experience.
• Turtle Release: If you visit between August and October, you might see baby turtles going to the sea. This was a bucket list item for me, and I will never forget it.

Things to Do in Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Despite its small size, there are many things to do in and around Isla Mujeres. 

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

Isla Mujeres is a diver’s paradise, thanks to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world. 

You can also visit Manchones Reef, which is ideal for beginners, with a depth of 30 to 40 feet.

Don’t miss the Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA), an underwater museum featuring over 500 sculptures. It’s a surreal experience and perfect for great underwater photos.

Garrafón Natural Reef Park is a hub for outdoor activities. In addition to snorkeling, you can go zip-lining, kayaking, or relaxing in a hammock by the sea.

Swimming with Whale Sharks

Swimming with whale sharks is a must-do if you visit between June and September. These gentle giants gather near the island, and several tour operators offer the chance to swim alongside them.

Enjoy the Beaches

No trip to Isla Mujeres is complete without some quality beach time. Here are the top beaches you should check out:

• Playa Norte: Known for its powdery white sand and calm waters, it’s the perfect spot for swimming and sunbathing. Playa Norte is often ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Punta Sur

About 30 km north of Isla Mujeres is Isla Contoy, a protected nature reserve home to various bird species. It’s a fantastic day trip for nature lovers. Visitor numbers are limited to protect the ecosystem, so you must book in advance.

While you can easily rent a golf cart to explore the island at your own pace, some companies offer guided golf cart tours. These tours often include stops at lesser-known spots and offer insights into the island’s history and culture.
